What Is A Diagnostic Port?

Ever wonder what the heck we're talking about when we ask which diagnostic port your truck has? All good, here's the breakdown...

There are three main types of diagnostic ports, you'll usually have a 6-pin (J1708), 9-pin (J1939), or OBDII. Typically light duty and medium duty trucks use OBDII ports and heavy duty trucks use 6-pin or 9-pin ports (Volvo and Mack trucks with OBDII ports use a different heavy duty cable).

Where To Look

Your diagnostic port will usually be located below the steering wheel on the left side by your pedals. Here's a few spots to look:
